The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has joined international partners to release guidance detailing the best protections against a threat actor affiliated with the People’s Republic of China (PRC), which has compromised networks of major global telecommunications providers.
The Enhanced Visibility and Hardening Guidance for Communications Infrastructure outlines recommended actions organisations can take to detect anomalous or suspicious behaviour, address vulnerabilities and threats, and respond to cyber incidents. It also provides guidance on reducing existing vulnerabilities, improving secure configuration habits, and limiting potential entry points.
While this guidance is primarily intended for network defenders and engineers responsible for managing communications infrastructure, it may also be applicable to organisations with on-premises enterprise equipment.
The NCSC and its international partners have released this guidance to raise awareness of this threat and provide defenders with practical steps to enhance visibility, detect malicious activity, and strengthen network devices against exploitation.
We encourage telecommunications providers and organisations with on-premises enterprise infrastructure in New Zealand to familiarise themselves with this guidance and apply the recommended best practices.
